BAA to Fast-track Introduction of Full-body Scans at Heathrow
Thursday, January 7, 2010 23:44BAA disclosed that travelers using London’s Heathrow airport will have to undergo checks by full-body scanners “as soon as practical”.
The move came after Gordon Brown, committed Britain to using the controversial technology, saying airports had to go further on security measures following the failed Christmas day terror attack on a transatlantic passenger jet. Critics, however, have warned that the introduction of the scanners could lead to long delays at airports and questioned their effectiveness.
People would see the full-body scanners gradually being brought in at UK airports, alongside checks for explosive traces on hand luggage and controls on transit as well as transfer passengers.
