Asda is gearing up for a major acquisition in order to seize general merchandise market share and to narrow the gap on its bigger competitor Tesco. The supermarket chain has been given the green light by its US parent Wal-Mart, which was frustrated at the lack of progress on expansion, to make the move.
It is known that Asda have sized up Homebase and Argos owner Home Retail but has also looked at many other companies based both on High Streets and out-of-town shopping parks.
Any future acquisition will possibly face regulatory scrutiny as it could dramatically increase the size of Asda.
