Arnie’s Ads Arrive on Licence Plates
Saturday, July 24, 2010 13:59It is incredible that California, that most peasant and prosperous of places, is pretty much broke. Even when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger compared California to history’s great nation states a few years ago, beaming that his adopted home had the ideas of Athens and the power of Sparta, it didn’t seem hugely hubristic. Unfortunately, as he neglected to add, it also has the economy of Greece.
Desperate times promote desperate thinking. The latest wheeze that California’s legislators are considering to reduce the $19 billion deficit is digital car licence plates. These gizmos will look like normal licence plates, but if the car stops for a few seconds, in traffic or at lights, they will broadcast advertising to the drivers behind.
While all unnecessary invasions of personal space by commercial importuning are to be resisted, or at least sworn at this one looks especially like the thin end of a paiful wedge.
